Abstract
1,129,504. Sintering Be-Ag alloys. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 31, 1967 [Feb. 11, 1966], No.4590/67. Heading C7D. Alloys of Be with other metals such as Ag are produced by liquid phase sintering a powder mixture of Be and Ag with a fluxing agent selected from the halogenides of the alkaline or alkaline earth metals. The powder mixture preferably consists of 60-85% weight Be and the remainder silver and the fluxing agent, which ispreferablya 1:1 mixture of Lif and LiCl forms 0À5-2% weight of the metal content. The mixture is hydrostatically or hydraulically pressed and sintered in argon at 1050‹ -1250‹ C., to form a compact of 95-99% theoretical density. Alloys containing about 85% Be require a double pressing and sintering to attain 95% theoretical density. During sintering 5-35% by volume of a liquid phase is formed. To avoid the formation of the v or # phases the compact is held at 750‹ C. during cooling or the sintered compact is reheated to 750‹ C. and held for 24 hours. The alloy may be quenched from 1, 010‹ C. in order to retain the high temperature form.
