Abstract

Magnesium-base alloys containing Zn and Zr are formed by adding to molten Mg an alloy of Zn, Zr and Mg. The added alloy is preferably an alloy of Zn with 8-15 per cent Mg and 5-30 per cent Zr and is added to molten Mg maintained at a temperature of about 800 DEG C. In making the master alloy Mg is added to molten Zn and Zr is added to the melt in the form of powder with stirring, at a temperature of 750 DEG C approximately. The Zr powder may be added mixed with a protective flux. This flux may be dispensed with if a closed alloying vessel is used containing an inert gas. Specification 511,137 is referred to.
