Abstract

Magnesium base alloys within the composition range Zr 0.1-1 and Th 0.5-8 per cent are re-melted at a temperature of 775-850 DEG C. under a flux cover containing less than 5 per cent Mg and not more than 5 per cent Mg Cl2 and an inert atmosphere consisting substantially of nitrogen, and treated by stirring with a zirconium alloying substance. A suitable flux composition is BaCl 40, MgCl2 30, KCl 10, CaF2 20 per cent. The operation may be carried out in a deep crucible, i.e. of a height equal to at least one and a half times its diameter.
