Abstract
843,954. Mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Feb. 14, 1958 [Jan. 23, 1957 (2)], Nos. 2501/57 and 2504/57. Class 20(2) A hydraulic pit prop comprises an outer pair of telescopic tubes 1, 2 within which are mounted coaxially and with radial clearance another pair of telescopic tubes 3, 4 defining a liquid pressure chamber 4 and bearing against sockets 5, 6 on the outer tubes. A further tube 31 telescopes under roof pressure against the friction of split-collets 34 mounted within a bush 33. The tubes 3, 4 have curved ends 12, 13 and are pivoted at 22, 23 to the outer tubes 1, 2. The prop is extended manually by a lever 24 which also opens a valve 17 to allow fluid in the tube 3 to enter the chamber 4 under suction. The prop is then preset by inserting the lugs 36, 37 of a jack between its head 5 and the bush 33, and then hammering in the collets 34.
