844,477. Mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Dec. 12, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 34044/57. Class 20(2) A telescopic pit prop comprises a tube 12 telescoping in a cylinder 1 which has a cylindrical extension 3 into which extension can be screwed a gland ring 6 to preset the prop by displacing hydraulic liquid from an annular storage space 14 into the pressure chamber 18 via grooves 19 in an annular flange 9 at the base of the cylinder 3. A spring 17 resting on the flange 9 supports an annular seal 15. The prop is extended manually by its lever 39, lifting of which against the action of a spring 36 also releases a pressure relief ball valve 28 and opens a breather valve 41, 42. When extended to the roof the prop is pre-set by screwing down the ring 6 as described.
