Class 20(2) The hydraulic friction lock 5 of a telescopic pit prop comprising tubes 1, 6 is operated by fluid via a pipe 7 from a bladder 30 mounted in the prop head which is compressed by the weight of the mine roof. The prop is first extended by introducing compressed air into the outer tube 6 at an orifice 16. Final setting of the lock 5 is achieved by an external key 15 which turns gears to force a piston 10 to collapse a bladder chamber 8 in communication with the pipe 7. An externally operable screw in the bladder 30 may replace the chamber 8. The bladder 30 is encircled by rubber bands 31 which facilitate its contraction. The bladder 20 of the lock 5 may be contained in two oppositely facing metal buckets each comprising a floor section having radial extensions with scarfed edges which are bent up to surround the bladder (Fig. 9, not shown, refers).
