Abstract

823,127. Mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955], No. 5450/55. Class 20 (2) [Also in Group XXX] Mine roof supports connected by feed jacks to a coal conveyer 13, Fig. 1, are of two kinds 14, 17 the supports 14 each having a roof bar with a longer cantilever extension 21 than the extension 22 of each support 17 so that the supports 14 can be advanced to support the newly exposed roof in the wake of a coal cutter 12 before the coal conveyer can be advanced. The supports 14 have two hydraulic props between floor and roof bars and the supports 17 have three hydraulic props and both supports are advanced by the feed jacks after the pressure in the hydraulic props has been released and the conveyer is advanced by the feed jack connections to the supports 14. Each prop has a convex base and head to allow rocking movement relative to the floor and roof bars, located by a spigot 29, Fig. 3, and a bolt 41 respectively, a rubber collar 32 restores the prop to the vertical. The feed jacks 44 are mounted in the hollow floor bars 23 by means of a gimbals 47 and the jack piston rod 51 is connected to the conveyer 13 by a universal joint 54 and a long vertical pin 55 to allow for relative movement of the floor bar and the conveyer 13. A shield 57 for the piston rod 51 is drawn out therewith by forks 58. The feed jack 44 is double acting, the chambers 99, 102, Fig. 4, of which are connected to supply and lease mains by a handoperated selector valve having spring plunger valves. The props are supplied and released through the selector valve and the jack 44, the supply being through the chamber 102, i.e. when the jack is fully contracted and a check valve 104 to a hand-operated spring plunger supply valve and check valves to each prop and the release takes place through check valves, a hand-operated release valve 127 and check valves 134, 135 to either the chamber 99 or 102 which ever is at low pressure. The release valve contains an excess pressure release valve 131. The roof supports 14 have an adjustable stop in the shield 57 to limit the distance the support advances.
