Abstract

686,066. Mine timbering machines. AUSTRALIAN IRON & STEEL, Ltd. April 17, 1951 [May 18, 1950], No. 8921/51. Class 20 (ii) [Also in Group XXX] A mine timbering machine for erecting roof beams and the supporting. props comprises a carriage 6, Fig. 2, having a turntable platform 10 on which is pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis 14 an outwardly extending boom 13 carrying at its outer end a jacking frame 80 for lifting and supporting the roof beams, the boom 13 being tilted about 'the axis 14 and maintained in the raised position by means of a screwed rod 21 carried in a threaded boss 22 on the boom and adapted to abut against a stop on the platform 10. Two similar wing members 48, Fig. 1, pivoted near the inner end of the boom, each on a vertical axis 49 and a horizontal axis 50, serve to push the props into position under the roof beam supported against the roof by the jacking frame 80. Horizontal rollers 11, 47 serve for handling the timbers which may be carried in a truck behind the carriage. The jacking frame 80 is pivoted on a vertical axis 26A to the outer end of the boom and comprises similar spaced outer members 27, 28, Fig. 3, linked to a central cylinder 29 by a crosshead 30. A hollow plunger 31 is slidably mounted in the cylinder in fluid tight fashion and is linked by a second crosshead 32 to middle members 33, 34 slidable in the outer members 27, 28. A piston located in the plunger 31 has a piston rod 35 linked by a third crosshead 36 to inner members 37, 38 slidable in the middle members 33, 34. Pressure fluid is supplied by a pipe 39 to the underside of the piston and stop means limit the upward movement of the piston in the plunger and the plunger in the cylinder. Rock arms 40, 41 are pivoted to the centres of the crossheads 30, 36 respectively, the upper rock arm 40 having curved cradles 42, 43 each pivoted about two horizontal axes 44, 45 and adapted to receive a roof beam, whilst foot plates 46 are similarly mounted on the lower rock arm 41. Each wing member 48 is formed of two closely spaced linked trusses 51, Fig. 4, having pivoted feet 54 adapted to bear against the mine floor, the top 55 slidably supporting a horizontal fluid pressure cylinder 56 with its piston rod 57 secured to the wing at 58. A forwardly facing U-shaped cradle 59, adapted to be closed by a latch for securing a prop, is secured to the outer end of the cylinder 56. Spaced rollers 61, 62 serve for handling the prop timbers. When inoperative, the wing members 48 may be supported clear of the floor on brackets 63, Fig. 2, on the boom 13. Single or double acting fluid pressure cylinders may be used, with water or compressed air controlled by valves 66, 67, 68, and spring means may be used for retraction or release of fluid: pressure. Specification 654,985 is referred to.
