Abstract
658,998. Hydraulic jacks. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Sept. 1, 1948, Nos. 23081/48 and 14470/49. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Groups X and XXIX] A mine roof support comprises two sets of props each consisting of at least two props 11, 11a and 12, 12a. The props in each set are rigidly connected by cross-tubes 15 and the sets are pivotally interconnected by links 17. Roof bars 18, 19 and floor bars 20, 21 are pinjointed to the props. When the props of one set are loosened, they are advanced by means of a hydraulic jack 28. The props may be operated hydraulically. The supply of pressure fluid to the props and to the jack 28 may be controlled by a valve box 30, Fig. 3. With the props in the full line position, pressure-fluid is supplied by a pump 39 from a reservoir 38 into a valve chamber 42. The fluid passes through a valve 43, passage 45 and pipe 37 to the jack 28, and through a non-return valve 51 and pipe 33 to the props 11, 11a. The props 12, 12a are closed to the reservoir so that they also support the desired roof load. As the jack 28 is in its contracted position and the piston cannot move inwards, pressure builds up in the passage 45 causing a piston 54 to move up and open a non- return valve 50, to open the props 12, 12a to the reservoir. The pressure in the chamber 42 also builds up and acts on a plunger 73 which through a spring-operated, dead-centre mechanism 65, 68 moves the valve 43 down to open the passage 45 to the reservoir and supply fluid through passage 44 and pipe 36 to expand the jack, and move the props 12, 12a to the position shown dotted. A similar cycle then takes place, pressure building up in the passage 44 and the chamber 42, to move the props 11, 11a. Relief valves 55, 56 are set to limit a maximum roof load of 50 tons for each pair of props. The pipes to the prop also include non- return valves 58 and relief valves 59 which ensure that the props support a roof load of 1 ton, when loosened. Manually operated valves may be provided for relieving the props. According to the first Provisional Specification the props may be provided with springs which act against the fluid pressure.
