841,568. Bridges. BARTLETT, V. F., ANDERSON, J. K. & KELL, J. [trading as MOTT, HAY & ANDERSON]. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 10, 1956], No. 24613/56. Class 20(1) An expansion joint for a bridge consists of a plurality of metal plates set on edge and extending across the bridge intercalated with cushions of rubber and supported on beams spanning the gap between the fixed and the expanding and contracting portions of the bridge. The expanding and contracting part of a bridge is carried on longitudinal stringers 13, and the fixed part on stringers 11, these stringers being supported, respectively, by cross-girders 14, 15. Joists 16, 17 attached respectively to cross-girders 14, 15 span the gap between the parts of the bridge and carry the expansion joint which consists of mildsteel plates 22, each plate being bonded at its upper and lower edge to a strip of rubber 24 which may be of trapezoidal or tubular form. In an alternative form of the joint, the metal plates are arranged in pairs with rubber strips between them so that, when assembled, two plates are in contact between every pair.
