981,946. Road expansion joints. MASCHINENFABRIK ESSLINGEN. Oct. 23, 1963 [Dec. 5, 1962], No. 41912/63. Heading E1G. An expansion joint of the type between a bridge deck or road 4 and an abutment or second road 10 to cover a gap f has supporting members 6 extending across the gap and supporting a flexible plate 1 connected to the first road part 4, the plate 1 curving downwards to a location lower than the surface of the second road part 13 such that on relative movement of the road parts the plate move round the curved path. The supporting members 6 are slidably located in plates 7 in one road section and may be supported on a bearing 9 in the other section or hinged thereto. The flexible plate 1 is a rubber carpet with transverse reinforcing bars 16 having flattened ends to slide on the supporting members 6 and locating dowels to engage the underside of flanges on the members 6. Two or more plates 1 may be joined at their edges.
