839,947. Combined buffer and draw gear for railway vehicles. NATIONAL MALLEABLE & STEEL CASTINGS CO. July 10, 1958 [July 16, 1957], No. 22150/58. Class 103(5) In known combined buffing and draw gear systems, Fig. 3a, cracking on the rear wall 24 of a vertically angling shank coupler has been caused by the improper seating of the butt end 32 against the associated yoke or draft gear follower when the coupler has been subjected to high buffing impacts. In order to avoid this cracking and obtain a better seating of the impact surfaces the common centre of curvature A, Fig. 1, of the inside and outside surfaces 22<SP>1</SP> and 32<SP>1</SP> of the rear wall 24 taken in vertical cross section is raised upwardly of the horizontal plane passing through the longitudinal centre of the shank. The old centre of curvature B of the surfaces 22 and 32 is shown as being on the plane passing through the centre line of the shank.
