A railway car has a centre sill 10 extending longitudinally thereof and has at each of its ends a draft rigging including a vertical yoke 24 contained within a horizontal yoke 20, each of the yokes being free to move longitudinally with respect to the other and to the sill, follower blocks 27 and 28 abutting the yokes 20 and 24, respectively, and a cushion 29 interposed between them. Shanks 21 and 25 are integral with yokes 20 and 24, respectively, and shank 25 is slotted at 26. A coupler shank 23, slotted at 30 to receive a key 31, penetrates yoke 20, the key 31 extending into a slot 32 in yoke 20 with which it makes contact in draft when pressure is applied through blocks 27 and 28 upon the cushion 29 and a key 33 extending through slot 26 holds yoke 24 against movement. In draft, the shank 23 is drawn away from yoke 24 and shank 21 away from the cushion 29. In buff, the struck coupler shank applies pressure to yoke 24, key 31 moving in slot 32 in yoke 20 and in slots 35 in the centre sill. The movement displaces yoke 24 causing shank 25 to move and key 33 to move in slot 22. Cushion 29 is compressed and the shanks 21 and 25 penetrate the bolster assembly 16, pressure applied to the cushion tube 19 being transmitted to the non struck end. Key 33 travels in slots 37 and 38 in sill 10 and bolster assembly 16 as tube 19 moves away from the draft stops 34. In buff, at the non-struck end, tube 19 moves shank 21 and yoke 20 to the left, applying pressure to cushion 29. Block 27 is engaged by yoke 20 applying pressure on block 28 which is held against movement since yoke 24 is stopped by key 33 contacting stop 34.
