a citizen of the United States, residing at Ihioago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful. Improvement in Tandem Draft-Riggings for RailwayOa1s, of which the following is a full, clear, P0116186, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tandem draft riggings for railway cars.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a draft rigging of the tandem type in which the usual central stop members or posts and the intermediate thimble in the draft yoke may be eliminated. Other ob jects of my invention will appear from the description thereof hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a horizontal, sectional view of a draft rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the followers,in this instance, the rear follower;
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates draft members or center sills, to which the draft rigging is adapted to be ap plied. The front stop members are shown at lll1 and the rear stop members at 1212. The draft rigging is supported by the tie-plate 13 secured to the draft members in a usual manner. 14 indicates a draw bar, only the rear portion thereof being shown, and 15 a draft yoke secured thereto. Within the draft yoke are mounted the front and rear followers 16 and 17, respectively. One of said followers,as for instance, the front follower 16, comprises a transversely arranged plate 18 having rearwardly extended therefrom a preferably integral hollow housing 19 which in the particular form shown in the drawing is provided laterally with the bracing members 20 shown integral therewith, and with a rear intermediate follower 32 which is preferably integral with the housing 19.
Within this housing the front spring 21 is mounted, consisting of an outer coil 22 and an inner coil 23. The said springis forwardly seated against the front follower 16 and is rearwardly seated against the front intermediate follower 24 which is also rear follower 17.

The rear follower 17 consists of a transversely arranged plate 21" having a forwardly extending casing 28 within which the rear spring 29, consisting of the outer coil 30 and inner coil 31, is mounted. T he said spring is rearwardly seated against the rear follower and forwardly seated against the rear intermediate follower 32. The rear intermediate follower is provided with a central. perforation 33 for the passage of the plunger 26 which is in preferable construction, integral with the The casing of the rear follower is provided near its forward end with thelateral slots 31-45 1 within which the laterally extended guides 35 of the rear intermediate follower may travel.

On rearward movement of the draw bar, the rear follower is held against retreating by the rear stop members, and the plunger 26 thereof holds the front intermediate follower in its normal position, the latter resisting the rearward compression of the front spring, and the former resisting the rearward movement of the rear spring. The front spring, is compressed by the rearward travel of the front follower, which also by reason of its actuation of the rear intermediate follower, compresses the rear spring. The rear intermediate follower moves rearwardly upon the plunger 26 and with its guides within the slots 3% until it engages the rear of said slots indicated in Fig. 3 by the numeral 36, which limits the compressing movement of the parts and prevents the springs from being driven solid.
On forward movement of the draw bar,
the front follower is prevented from retreating by the front stop members, the yoke draws the rear follower forwardly, the plunger forcing the front intermediate follower forwardly against the front spring which resists its movement and the rear intermediate follower is held against forward movement by the casing of the front follower, thus permitting the compression of the rear spring between the rear intermediate follower and the forwardly moving rear follower, which movement may continue until the ends 36 of the slots 34L engage the rear intermediate follower, thus limiting the compressing movement of the parts.
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination: front and rear main followers, an intermediate follower integral with one of said followers, a further intermediate follower and front and rear springs, each of said main followers having means slidingly engaging an intermediate follower, the springs being mounted each between an intermediate follower and the opposed main follower, one of the main followers being provided with a plunger passing through one intermediate follower and engaglng the j other'intermediate follower, the other main follower receiving the last mentioned intermed ate follower w1th1n'1ts housm 2. spring housing on each of said followers, a springwithin each housing, an intermediate follower for each-of said springs, one of the intermediate followers being mounted within one housing, the other intermediate follower engaging the ends of said housing, the
other housing being provided with a slot to slidingly receive the last mentioned intermediate follower, and-one of the end followers 'illllfO' being provided with a plunger passing all one intermediate follower and engaging tee other intermediate follower.
3. in a draft rigging for railway cars, in vcombination: alined housings, a main follower associated with each of said housings, a spring within each housing, an intermediate follower received within one of said housings, and a further intermediate follower, one of said housings being provided with slots to slidingly receive the last men-' tioned intermediate follower and a plunger to engage the first mentioned intermediate follower.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in V combination: a pair of intermediate followers, one of which is centrally perforated; a pair of springsyand two main followers, one of said main followers being provided with a casing within which to receive one of said springs, a central plunger passing through said perforated intermediate 'follower and slots to. slidingly accommodate saidintermediate follower; the other of said main followers beingprovided witha casing Y to receive the second spring and the other intermediate follower, the latter being adapted to be actuated by the plunger upon relative approach of the main folowers.
