Abstract
839,639. Variable electrical components. A.B. METAL PRODUCTS Ltd. Dec. 30, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 30961/56. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (c)] A variable component such as a resistor or potentiometer is operated by rotation of a spindle which may be engaged with or disengaged from a rotatable unit carrying a contact arm, the engagement or disengagement being effected by axial movement of the spindle, which also operates a switch mounted in the front of the potentiometer. In the embodiment shown the actuator 11 may be moved axially against the influence of the spring 18, such that the two dogs 16 engage with any pair of the four pairs of diametrically-opposed holes 17 in the female portion of the clutch 6. As the actuator 11 moves inwards, a flange 13 pushes a spring contact 9 away from the fixed contact 14 to engage with the contact 15. By rotating the actuator whilst it is pressed in the rotor assembly 4, 5 is caused to rotate moving the wiping contact 3 over the resistance element 2. Ganged potentiometers may be incorporated with the switch.
