Abstract
691,758. Change-speed control. WARD & CO., Ltd., H. W. Nov. 6, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1950], No. 28031/50. Class 80 (ii). In a lathe driven by a reversible electric motor and having a pair of friction clutches associated with a variable-speed headstock, a control lever c is pivoted on a horizontal pin a carried by a rotatable vertical brush d. Movement of the lever in a horizontal plane moves the clutch collar g through a fork f secured to a spindle e fast in the bush d, while movement of the lever in a vertical plane operates, through a stem, a pair of switch arms pivoted on pins j and loaded by a common spring k, the arms i carying contacts m cooperating with fixed contacts n so that the motor rotates in one direction or the other. The arms i carry pivoted members s shaped as shown in Fig. 3, the arrangement being such that the stem o can move the arms i only when the lever c is at or near its central position in the horizontal plane so that both clutches are disengaged. Alternatively, the lever c may be movable in a gate.
