Abstract

850,399. Machine-tool details; boring-mills. WARNER & SWASEY CO. Dec. 9,1957 [Dec. 14, 1956], No. 38221/57. Class 83 (3). An arrangement for controlling the speed and direction of movement of a machine-tool element such as a slide, includes a single lever which operates through switch-means and a control-circuit. A boring and turning-mill with a rotating work-table 11, Fig. 1, and toolslides D, D<1>, vertically-movable on horizontallyadjustable carriages C, C<1>, respectively, has a control-panel 24 carrying single lever-control members 26, 27, for the direction and speed of movement of the tool-slides. The levers are identical and one only is described. Each lever controls a pair of hydraulic motors, e.g. 14, 20, which, through lead-screws 16, 21, respectively, move the two slides for the tool T. The lever 26, Fig. 2, is secured to a ball-member 65 which moves within a socket 48. A stem 69, secured to the lower part of the ball-member, carries a mushroom-shaped cam-piece 68. The stem 69 moves in a cruciform " gate " 67 forming part of the support 48. The latter may be turned, and held in a position at 45 degrees to the normal position, by spring-pressed balls 57 for a purpose described below. The lever 26 is held in the neutral (vertical) position by radial spring- pressed plungers 70. When the lever is moved away from the neutral position in one of the planes represented by the cruciform " gate," the tool is moved in a corresponding direction and at a speed in accordance with the displacement of the lever. If the support 48 is moved to a position at 45 degrees, movement of the lever then operates two slides simultaneously and the tool moves angularly. The cam 68 operates switches 76-79, Figs. 2 and 5, these closing in the positions of the lever when the switch-rollers 75 &c. move over the edge of the cam. A spring-pressed plunger 80 also contacts the cam, the mushroom surface of which moves the plunger to which is connected core 90 of a differential-transformer for effecting the feed control. This is obtained through a controlcircuit which finally passes current to a pair of torque-motors operating valves for the hydraulic motors 14, 20. A further switch 87, Fig. 2, is provided so that when the plunger 80 is depressed by the cam to its maximum extent, a rapid traverse is obtained for the tool slide. The control-circuit is adapted selectively to correlate the speed of the work-spindle and a tool slide. Specification 850,400 is referred to.
