Abstract

A synthetic resin composition comprises one or more water-insoluble thermoplastic synthetic resins, one or more plasticizers and starch which is present in a water-insoluble state or in combination with substances which render the starch water-insoluble. The synthetic resin which may be formed by polymerization in the presence of the starch, plasticizer, pigments and stabilizers is preferably a polyvinyl compound and may be polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylic acid ester, polymethyl methacrylate or mixtures or copolymers of these and may be in the form of a latex. The composition may also comprise extender plasticizers such as petroleum extracts, Edeleanu extracts or chlorimated paraffins, other fillers, such as hard fillers, colouring agents, pigments and preservatives for the starch such as mercury salts, phenol derivatives or dehydroacetic acid. The plasticizer may be an ester of phthalic, adipic or sebacic acid, e.g. dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate and the starch may be potato, wheat, rice or maize starch and may be rendered insoluble by treatment with diketones, glycols, aldehydes, isocyanates or tanning agents. The starch may be impregnated with volatile solvents such as methyl ethyl, or isobutyl, ketones to produce a substance with fine pores after gelling the composition and evaporating the solvent. Starch is made water-insoluble by means of insolubilizing agents such as diketones, glycols, aldehydes, e.g. glyoxal, isocyanates or tanning agents. The starch may be rice, wheat or maize starch or potato flour. In an example, wheat starch is insolubilized by heating with aqueous glyoxal solution in the presence of a trace of sulphuric acid.ALSO:A composition comprising a thermoplastic synthetic resin, a plasticizer and insoluble starch which is impregnated with a volatile solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone or methyl butyl ketone is gelled by heat-treatment and the solvent evaporated to yield a substance with fine pores.
