Abstract

Adhesive composition, which is applied to a backing prior to coating with particulate material, may be of the kind referred to in Specification 644,002, e.g. a solution in a volatile solvent such as acetone of polyvinyl acetate plasticized with a major proportion of a volatile plasticizer such as dimethyl phthalate, glycol diacetate, triethyl phosphate or tributyl phosphate, and a minor proportion of a less volatile plasticizer such as tricresyl phosphate or triphenyl phosphate; a solution in a volatile solvent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone, of a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, vulcanizing ingredients therefor, e.g. sulphur, mercapto-benzthiazole and diphenyl guanidine and zinc oxide, to which may be added a mixture of two plasticizers of different volatilities e.g. dimethyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate to which a oumarone resin may be added; a dispersion of a polymer such as polyvinyl chloride that undergoes gelling when heated; blends of polyvinyl chloride with rubber-like polymers, e.g. copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile; an adhesive having a basis of a heat-hardening synthetic resin, e.g. a heat-hardening addition polymer such as diallyl phthalate or allyl diglycol phthalate with a catalyst if necessary. In order to avoid fire hazard the adhesive, for instance one having a basis of a rubber-like polymer, is formed with a volatile non-inflammable solvent such as a chlorinated lower aliphatic hydrocarbon. Pigments may be added to the composition.
