Abstract

1,137,069. Starch based adhesives. T. L. REILING. 5 Nov., 1965, No. 47131/65. Heading C3U. [Also in Divisions B2 and C4] Adhesive compositions for an application to a substrate comprise 100 parts by weight of water soluble adhesive, and 10 to 50 parts by weight of water, 2 to 16 parts by weight of water insoluble polymer, and an organic solvent dissolving said polymer, the adhesive being at least partially dissolved by the water and forming a dispersion of adhesive globules in the solvent. Adhesives specified are natural gum resins, gum tragacanth, gum arabic, glues, such as animal bone glue, hide glue, vegetable glue, and fish glue, agar-agar, methyl and ethyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose, and such synthetic resins as polyvinyl alcohol, and starch products such as British gum and dextrine. The polymers are preferably of high molecular weight and may either be in latex or solid form. Exem. plified are methyl acrylate resins, ethyl acrylate resins, butyl acrylate resins, polybasic acid polyhydric alcohol resins, such as those marketed under the Registered Trade Mark " Glyptal ", polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetate copolymers, and rubber polymers both natural and synthetic. The organic solvent may be an alcohol, a ketone, a glycol, a hydrocarbon, or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. A number are specified. The adhesive compositions may also contain an electrolyte such as an acid or a salt, of which several are specified. The adhesive composition may also contain a release agent such as a silicone, a solvent soluble thermosetting resin such as a phenol-, melamine- or urea-formaldehyde resin, polytetrafluoroethylene or formaldehyde. Fillers may also be present. A thermoplastic material such as finely divided polystyrene may also be present in the composition so that the coating has heat sealable properties. The compositions may be prepared by producing a dispersion of water soluble adhesive in an organic solvent, the adhesive being at least partly dissolved with water so that it is in the form of dispersed adhesive globules and dissolving a water insoluble organic polymer in the organic solvent to assist in stabilizing the dispersed adhesive globules.
