633,631. Coating leather. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Oct. 14, 1946, No, 30518. Convention date, March 24, 1945. [Class 140] Leather or leather splits are finished by coating with an aqueous dispersion of a plasticised vinyl resin, removing the water from the coating and heating the coating at a temperature, which may be above the softening point of the. resin, without applying pressure until the particles of plasticised resin have fused to form a coherent film. Infra-red heating or a current of hot air may be used for removing the water orfor the fusing step. The plasticiser may be added to the resin before, during or after manufacture. The coating may be applied by brushing, dipping, spraying or spreading. The vinyl resins may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copolymers of these monomers with vinyl acetate, propionate, or butyrate; methyl, butyl, dodecyl or phenyl acrylate, methyl or ethyl methacrylate ; methyl ethacrylate ; maleic acid or anhydride; esters of maleic acid or chloromaleic acid; ethylene diacrylate. The plasticisers specified are tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, dioctyl sebacate, ethylene glycol dioleate, undecyl tetrahydronaphthyl ketone and octyl o-benzoylbenzoate. The coating may include pigments, fillers, dyes and other resins. A grain surface may be simulated by treating the coating after the fusing step in an engraved calender or mould. The leather may be dyed before coating with the vinyl resin.
