Abstract

A lubricating composition, suitable for use in rolling metals, comprises a major proportion of water and a minor proportion of a diester of a polyoxyalkylene glycol, the glycol having a molecular weight of less than 400, and the diester being self-dispersible in water. The glycol may contain a plurality of dissimilar alkylene radicles and may be esterified with a carboxylic, sulphonic or phosphonic acid. The carboxylic acid may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic, but is preferably an alkane or alkene monocarboxylic acid such as acetic, propionic, butyric, lauric, stearic or oleic acid. Examples of suitable diesters are polyethylene glycol dioleate and polyethylene polypropylene glycol dilaurate. The composition may also contain a minor proportion of at least one anti-corrosion agent, suitable anti-corrosion agents being salts of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals (especially those salts derived from saturated or unsaturated C10-C30 fatty acids), lower alkanolamines (e.g. having not more than 42 carbon atoms) and their salts (e.g. diethanolamine oleate). The composition may also contain a minor proportion of a surface-active agent, additional to the diester. Examples of suitable surface-active agents are other polyoxyalkylene liquids (e.g. polyalkylene glycol mono- or diethers, mono-esters and ether-esters). In the examples, the compositions employed are aqueous solutions of a dioleate ester of a polyethylene glycol (the glycol having a molecular weight of 200 or 300), with or without diethanolamine oleate.
