Abstract

A lubricating grease useful under highly corrosive conditions comprises a lubricating oil gelled with a metal soap of a fatty acid or hydroxy fatty acid and minor proportions of an oil-soluble alkaline earth metal salt of a hydrocarbon sulphonic acid and a mono-ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid and a polyoxyalkylene glycol wherein each oxyalkylene radical contains 2 to 6 carbon atoms. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a synthetic lubricant such as the aliphatic esters of dicarboxylic acids, liquid polyoxyalkylene glycols and oxides, liquid phosphorus esters and silicate. Soaps mentioned are the alkali or alkaline earth metal soaps of fatty or hydroxy fatty acids, calcium or lithium stearate or 12-hydroxy stearate being preferred. The hydrocarbon sulphonates are preferably petroleum sulphonates and may be neutral or, preferably, basic. Examples are believed to have the formula (RSO3)M.OH, where M is an alkaline earth metal and R is a hydrocarbon radical such as naphthenyl, alkyl naphthenyl, aryl or naphthenyl aryl. The molecular weight of the sulphonates should be between 400 and 750. The polyalkylene glycol mono-esters have the general formula H-(O-R)n-OOC-R1 where R is an alkylene radical containing 2-6 carbon atoms, n is a whole integer, preferably between 5 and 20, and R1 is an organic radical, preferably an alkyl radical having between 8 and 24 carbon atoms. Examples of suitable glycols are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyamylene and polyhexylene glycols and combinations thereof. The acids used to form the esters comprise both saturated and unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids including both fatty acids and hydroxy fatty acids. Examples are capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids. Optional ingredients are the oil-soluble polyvalent metal salts of dithiocarbamic acids (many examples listed) and amine type antioxidants such as phenyl-alpha naphthylamine and guanidine derivatives. In examples, calcium sulphonates and polyethylene glycol mono-oleate were added to a mineral oil gelled with lithium 12-hydroxy stearate. Zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate was also added in one case.
