Abstract

A rust-inhibiting composition, particularly for addition to a lubricant, comprises at least 50 per cent of a fatty acid ester and an oil-soluble mixture comprising commercial sulphonates of which the free alkali has been substantially neutralized with a non-fatty organic acid. The ratio of sulphonate to ester may vary from 10:1 to 1:10 and is preferred between 5:1 and 1:5. The sulphonate may be a mahogany acid sulphonate, preferably of the alkali metals, particularly sodium, and the molecular weight of the sulphonic acid should be between 300 and 600, preferably 400 and 550. The esters may be the fatty acid mono- or poly-esters of mono- or polyhydric alcohols. Preferred fatty acids have more than 12 carbon atoms and examples of unsaturated fatty acids used are oleic, ricinoleic, linoleic, erucic and the trimer of ricinoleic acid. Saturated fatty acids mentioned are lauric, palmitic and stearic acids. Polyethylene glycols, particularly those up to and including hexaethylene glycol may be used as the alcohols. Benzoic acid may be used as the non-fatty organic acid and others given are cinnamic, phthalic, molonic and lactic acids. Specification 740,807 is referred to.
