Abstract
Alloy steels suitable for use as dies, moulds, punches, or in welded constructions have compositions, in per cent by weight, in the following range: .Mn.6.0-11.5 .Cr.2.0-10.0 .Mo and/or W.3.1-8.0 .C.0.02-0.5 .Si sufficient to deoxidize the alloy. .Fe and impurities the balance.. The impurities may include S and P up to 0.05 each, and Ni and Cu up to 0.3 each. When C exceeds 0.1 strong carbide-forming elements such as Nb, Ta, Ti, V, Zr may be added to combine with the excess C. Al, Ni, N may also be present up to 2.5 in total. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys in which the ranges of proportions of constituents are Mn 6-12, Cr 2-5, Mo 2-4, C up to 0.2 Carbide forming elements may be added to steels containing over 0.05 of C.
