Abstract

838,316. Windscreen wipers. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT, and SUISSE, M. July 30, 1957 [April 27, 1957 ; July 2, 1957], No. 24117/57. Class 138(1). A windscreen wiper is constituted by a frame and a wiper blade, the latter being reinforced by an armature when so required, characterised in that the said frame is given a profile such that the wind stream passing over the windscreen produces an over pressure' at the side of the frame remote from the windscreen and a depression at the side of the frame nearer the windscreen so as to force the blade against the windscreen, the said profile preferably comprising a convex face directed towards the blade and a concave or flat face directed away from the blade. As shown, the cross-section of the frame may take the form of a U, Fig. 5, an L, Fig. 6, or an inverted airfoil, Fig. 8. The edge of the frame which meets the air stream mav be inclined towards the windscreen, for example, by a twist given to the blade carrying arm or by the use of an asymetrical stirrup coupling the wiper arm to the frame. Transverse partitions 19 may be provided along the frame to keep the airstream perpendicular to the frame and a blade 25, Fig. 14, may be used, only the tip of which flexes at 29.
