Abstract
837,801. Pneumatic separating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 22, 1957 [May 14, 1956; July 20, 1956], Nos. 14965/56 and 22636/56. Class 117 Particles entrained in a gas stream are separated according to size in a vertical cylinder, some being carried up the cylinder to a first collector while others fall from the stream to a second collector. In particle separating apparatus as shown, air is blown by an impeller 6 through a Venturi tube b and particles to be separated are fed from funnel 4 to the throat of the Venturi tube where they are entrained by the air stream and pass through a tube 2 having an upwardly turned and outwardly flared nozzle 3, which may have swirl vanes, into a separating cylinder 1 wherein some particles are carried to the top and are collected at 7 while the others are removed at the bottom. In order to ensure a more complete separation, the particles removed from the bottom of the cylinder 1 may be circulated through one or more secondary cylinders 8, here shown as one, the particles settling in the lower part of each secondary cylinder except the last passing into the inlet tube of the next secondary cylinder and the outlets from the tops of the secondary cylinders being all connected to the inlet of the main cylinder. Particles entrained in the air leaving the top of the main cylinder may be removed from the air stream by a bag filter, centrifuge or electrostatic separator and a suction pump may be used instead of the impeller 6.
