Abstract

474,789. Centrifugal dustseparators. JENNINGS, H. W. K. (Bowen Research Corporation) May 8, 1936, No. 13104. [Class 23] A dust-separator unit consists of a Venturi tube 19, 20, Fig. 3, provided with vanes 22 at the end 19 to whirl the entering gas, so that dust is separated and discharged by centrifugal force through an opening in the vicinity of the throat. The opening may be a longitudinal slit 18 with one edge pressed outwards as shown in Fig. 4, or it may be an annular gap formed where the discharge pipe fits inside a skirt on the throat. A separator may be built up with a number of units in one structure with an inlet 13, Fig. 1, and a clean gas outlet 14 ; the ends of the tubes are of rectangular shape so that they fit closely together. A dust hopper 11 is arranged beneath the structure and an outlet 12 permits the escape of the gas which passes through the slots 18 with the dust. Partitions 24, 26 are arranged to form channels through which the separated dust passes to the hopper 11. Blades 28 may be arranged in the upper part of the hopper. In a modification the discharge opening 18 for separated dust from each Venturi tube is surrounded by an enclosed casing with a valve controlled discharge opening, so that the interior of the casing is not subject to atmospheric pressure. The gas may be supplied to the Venturi tubes through scrolls which impart a whirling motion to it, and discharge scrolls may convey the gas to cyclone separators.
