In the separation of a mixture of particles, a mass of fluid and the particles is caused to whirl whilst descending, and the descending mass is met by an ascending whirling stream of fluid so that the mass is spread out in a generally horizontal plane. A separator suitable for the process comprises a vessel 2 having a conical part 3 connected by a cylindrical throat 4 to a bulbous chamber 6 for collection of the denser particles. The mixture is supplied to the vessel by a tangential inlet pipe 9 connected to a pump 11 which draws up carrier liquid and the particles from a container 13. If the particles are grain stalks and seeds, these may be threshed during passage through the pump. An outlet pipe 18 for the less dense particles has a telescopic inlet 19 situated on the axis of the vessel. Curved radial vanes 17 in the throat are arranged to cause liquid mixture from the bulbous chamber to whirl with the mixture in the conical part of the vessel. A jet tube 29 is supported by the vanes. Some of the liquid from the vessel passes through a pipe 26 to enter the bulbous chamber with a whirl opposite to that in the conical part of the vessel. In a modification in which the carrier fluid is air, the bulbous chamber is dispensed with so that ambient air is drawn in through the throat. A particle mixture may be run through the separator and one or the other of the fractions may be re-cycled to obtain a fraction of required density.
