Abstract

In a helical-flow vortex separator for removing dust particles from a gas, the crude gas is fed into one end of a vortex chamber 1 through an inlet tube 2 and relatively pure gas is withdrawn from the opposite end of the chamber through an outlet tube 6 from the outer region of which a portion of the relatively pure gas is removed through a duct 9 and introduced as auxiliary gas by means of a blower 10 and a duct 11 into the annular gap 7 between the tube 6 and the chamber 1, guide vanes 8 being provided in the gap to recirculate the auxiliary gas in the chamber 1 in the form of an outer potential flow which combines with the crude gas to create an inner rotary flow whereby the particles are separated from the crude gas and discharged with a branch of the potential flow via the annular gap 15 between the inlet tube 2 and the chamber 1. The separator may be used for the extraction of a gas sample from a waste gas channel 4. The annular gap 15 is in communication with a receptacle 16 which opens into the channel 4 by way of an aperture 17. Vanes 3 may be provided in the inlet tube 2 to impart a spin to the crude gas. A clean gas discharge tube 13 is coaxially mounted in the outlet tube 6 and vanes 14 may be provided upstream of the tube 13 to provide further spin to the gas to assist in the separation of any particles remaining the outflowing gas.
