Abstract

987,671. Pneumatic separators. R. E. MANLEY. March 13, 1964 [April 15, 1963], No. 10796/64. Heading B2H. Particles are classified by dropping them from a hopper 76, Fig. 3, in a stream 68 where they are separated by a transverse air current into collectors 92 from which they drop in adjacent streams, in the order in which collected, for further separation into fractions by a transverse air current and collection by second collecting means 94. As shown, the particles are classified in four successive stages. Sand extracted by a pump 24 from a quarry 10, Fig. 1, is delivered as a slurry to a washer and drier 26 before being elevated by a conveyer 28 to a hopper 32 which, as shown in Fig. 2, is divided into compartments each fitted with an outlet pipe 46 and valve 44 for feeding its associated classifying cell 34 below. As shown in Fig. 3, each cell is arranged to discharge the sand via a flap valve 84 into contact with the air stream which is drawn through the cell by a fan 197. Each cell is subdivided into superposed classifying compartments 68, 70, 72, 74, constituting the successive pneumatic classifying stages by the corresponding collectors which are in the form of separate shoots with discharge outlets to provide the separate streams; the angle of inclination of the shoots is such that the particles roll, rather than slide, downwardly. The finer particles which are entrained by the air stream are separated-out by closelyspaced baffle-plates 180 which are inclined in both an upward and lateral direction for directing the particles into a collecting duct 176; the air is directed through dampers 182, 184, 186 and discharged through a pipe 212 to atmosphere or a dust extractor. Disposed below the final stage collectors 98, are ducts which are provided with sloping bottom surfaces 179 for directing the fractions to silos 100c-114c and 176a. The air entering the cells may be heated and the cells may be operated under pressure rather than suction.
