858,295. Centrifugal separators; jet mills. STERN, H. Oct. 31, 1957 [Nov. 12, 1956], No. 33987/57. Classes 23 and 59 In apparatus for classifying particles or for breaking down agglomerations of particles comprising a whirl chamber 1 having adjacent one end an inlet 7 for the particles, the whirl chamber has a plurality of tangential inlets 3 for fluid which are distributed over the greater part of the peripheral wall of the whirl chamber. A classifier is shown in which the fluid (air) is supplied by a pipe 21 to a jacket 8 surrounding the whirl chamber. Fractions are collected in chambers 9, 11, 18 adjacent the end of the whirl chamber remote from the particle inlet. Fluid discharging from the chamber 18 is separated from the finest fraction by a filter 18a or by a cyclone and is recirculated by a fan 20 and the pipe 21 to the jacket. The whirl chamber may be frusto-conical and its inlets may be formed by a series of tangential holes. In a classifier having a vertical axis the whirl chamber has an upper reduced diameter part of which breaks down agglomerations of particles, the collector chambers other than that for the finest fraction are frusto-conical and below the whirl chamber, the collector for the finest fraction is cylindrical and extends upwardly from the whirl chamber. In apparatus used solely for breaking down particles the separator collectors are replaced by a single collector.
