837,639. Propelling ships. HAWTHORNE, J. M. Sept. 2, 1957, No. 27612/57. Class 114. A screw propeller arranged to manoeuvre a ship in which the housing 54 of the propeller 10 extends upwards at 56 and is secured to a waterproof propulsion motor 12. The motor depends from a screw 14 passing through a nut 16 rotatable by a motor-driven worm 20 to lower the propeller to its operative position or to raise it into the ship's hull, a valve plate 58 on the propeller housing 54 then engaging the bevelled edges of an aperture in the hull H or in a compartment 48 secured to the hull to make a watertight joint therewith when bayonet type catches 64 on the valve plate are engaged. The propulsion motor 12, the screw 14 and the nut and worm 16, 20 are contained in a motor housing 30 having a base plate 76 against which the motor casing makes a tight joint when in its operative position. The plate and housing and with them the propulsion motor &c. are rotatable in an outer housing 46 fixed within the ship's hull H, rotation being effected by a worm wheel 40 and a power driven worm 42 to use the propeller for steering. An upward extension 92 of the outer housing 46 accommodates an extension 90 of the inner housing this extension providing space for axial movement of the screw 14 and electrical connections for the motors actuating the worms and 20 42.
