961,740. Bow steering devices. STONE MANGANESE MARINE Ltd. June 13, 1963 [June 13, 1962], No. 22778/62. Heading B7V. A bow steering installation comprises a housing 5 supporting a fixed-pitch propeller 6 and enclosing an hydraulic motor (Fig. 2, not shown) arranged to drive said propeller, means 4 for supporting housing 5 in a transverse tunnel 1 in the bows of a ship, a reversible variable capacity hydraulic pump 11 mounted in the ship's hull, a prime mover arranged to drive said pump, and conduits 9, 10 joining said pump to said motor. As shown, said means 4 is a strut secured to a mounting plate 3 on the ship's hull, said strut accommodating the conduits 9, 10. The mounting plate 3 also supports cylindrical tunnel section 2 which forms part of tunnel 1. The prime mover is a constant-speed uni-directional electric motor and the hydraulic pump and motor may be either rotary or reciprocal. The quantity and direction of the output from the hydraulic pump are controlled from a manual lever through a follow-up servo device (Fig. 3, not shown). Double-helical epicyclic reduction gearing forms the drive between the propeller and the hydraulic motor. The casing for the gearing is secured to housing 5 and accommodates bearings for the propeller shaft and a seal against entry of seawater.
