Abstract

837,469. Turbine blades. HYDE, J. A. C. March 28, 1958 [May 2, 1957], No. 10064/58. Class 110 (3). A turbine blade 11 having a hollow root platform 17 constituting a chamber PC spaced from the rotor disc and communicating with cooling channels 16 within the blade, is automatically connected under the action of centrifugal force with a gallery 22a forming a source of cooling fluid. The connection consists of a tube 30 slidable in the enlarged portions of radially directed coaxial passages 22, 26 in the disc and the root platform, respectively. When the turbine is stationary the uppermost tubes drop back into the openings 24 disengaging with the platform and permitting removal of the blades. Each blade consists of a grooved core 15 covered by a sheath 20. The root platform is formed by lateral extensions 14 on the blade, co-operating with a sheet metal casing 18 brazed to the sheath. The parts 19b of the casing prevent working fluid by-passing the blades and allow the blades to be removed leading edge first only. The rotor disc consists of two separate discs 10a and 10b abutting near their periphery but separated by a space 22a near their centres.
