Abstract
976,237. Making turbine discs. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Oct. 31, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1962], No. 43275/62. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F1] A method of making a turbine &c. rotor disc comprises bringing together two disc-like members 10, 11, Fig. 1, of opposing dish-section, applying pressure to the radially inner portions of the members to collapse them against each other so that their rims are in circumferential tension and their central portions in circumferential compression, and securing the members together to maintain their pre-stressed condition. The discs, which may have a central bore 12, are secured together by bolts or rivets passing through holes 13, or by brazing. In a modification, the discs are recessed to form a coolant chamber 31 and passages 28 connected by radial passages and communicating, through ducts 32, with the roots of turbine blades 23. Spacing lugs 33 on the disc 20 extend into the chamber 28 to bear on the disc 21. The discs are secured together by brazing at the rims 22 and by hollow rivets 25 through which, and through adjacent axial holes, passes cooling air.
