Abstract

Iron-filled polytetrafluoroethylene compositions are made by slurring in an anhydrous organic liquid wetter particulate polytetrafluoroethylene having an average particle size less than 2 microns, intermixing with the polymer whilst in slurry form iron particles of average size not exceeding 20 microns, and separating the liquid wetter from the intermixed particles under anhydrous conditions and at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the polymer to yield a powdery composition. In this method the quantity of iron particles constitutes from 44 to 90% of the combined volume of polymer and iron. The iron is preferably phosphate coated carbonyl iron. The wetter may be acetone, alcohol, naphtha, aliphatic or aromatic halogenated hydrocarbons, a glycol, an ester or ether, a ketone, a silicon oil, tricresyl phosphate, benzene, toluene, or para-xylene. The compositions are used in the manufacture of magnetic products.
