Abstract
Articles are made from a composition which comprises an inert inorganic substance of particle size between 0.05 and 20 microns and polytetrafluoroethylene of particle size less than 2 microns and in which the filler comprises 50 to 85% of the combined volume of the mixture by intermixing the polytetrafluoroethylene and filler particles in the presence of a liquid wetter for the polymer. In a modification the mixture may be mechanically worked to at least partially orient the polytetrafluoroethylene into fibrous form. The liquid is preferably an organic liquid, although water may be used alone or in admixture with the organic liquid. Liquid wetters which facilitate extrusion may also be used. The wetter may be acetone, alcohol, naphtha, a hydrocarbon, an aliphatic or aromatic halogenated hydrocarbon, an alcohol, a glycol, an ester, an ether, a ketone, a silicone oil, tricresyl phosphate, benzene toluene, or p-xylene. Fillers mentioned are iron particularly carbonyl iron, milled 1/32 inch glass fibres, graphite, and molybdenum disulphide. The articles may be formed from the mixture by calendering, or moulding under heat and pressure e.g. at temperatures up to 627 DEG F. Specification 837,199 is referred to.
