Abstract
836,927. Screw presses. LANGFORD, D. I. June 16, 1958 [July 3, 1957 ; Nov. 6, 1957], Nos. 20996/57 and 34572/57. Class 87(2). Driving means for a press of the type ineluding a ram mounted on a screw spindle 2 threaded through a frame head 1 and carrying a flywheel or bob-weights 7, 8 comprises a platform 11 secured against rotation with respect to the frame head, a pinion coupled for rotation with the screw spindle, and a rack 17 meshed with the pinion and movable in at least one direction of reciprocation by shifting means acting between it and the platform 11. In the example illustrated in Fig. 1, the pinion is bored so as to be a sliding fit on the screw spindle and is rotated by the rack 17 being reciprocated by piston 23 in cylinder 22 to which compressed air is admitted through a reversing valve 25 and either of conduits 26, 27. Two key ways are cut longitudinally in the screw spindle and these house keys 9 secured to the pinion. In another example, Figs 4, 5 (not shown), the pinion is keyed to the screw spindle, thus forcing the platform down against the action of a pair of springs when it rotates in one direction, the platform being lifted by these springs when the direction of rotation of the screw spindle is reversed.
