Abstract

835,411. Plying yarns. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 30, 1956 [June 1, 1955], No. 16749/56. Class 120(2) Apparatus for plying strands comprises two strand packages, means for revolving a strand from the first package in a balloon about the second package and including a yarn-storage balloon tension control device, means capable of revolving bodily about the same axis as the balloon and serving to deliver the strand from the balloon and the strand from the second package at positively related linear speeds along paths which converge to a point on the axis of the balloon at which point the strands become plied, and means for taking up the plied strands. In the arrangement shown a strand from package 11 is passed through tensioners 15, axially into ply spindle 16 and radially out therefrom to balloon about a cover 67, inside which is the stationary second package, and thence to the strand flow equalizing device 88. The strand from the second package inside cover 67 is led axially therefrom, around tensioners 78 and thence to the device 88. The two strands then become plied together and pass around a driven take up roller 144 to take up bobbin 152. The arrangement of the plying spindle is detached in Fig. 2 and of the strand flow equalizing device 88 in Fig. 3. The latter includes a shaft 90 rotatably supported in bearings 94 and 96 and having an enlargement 92 carrying two identical capstans 116 having bevel gear teeth which engage with a crown bevel idler gear 126 rotatably carried on shaft 9. This synchronous mechanical coupling of the two capstans ensures the two strands being fed at the same linear speed. To ensure a positive relationship between the rotation of the take up system and the plying spindle they are both driven from the same motor 35. A friction clutch 186 is provided on the drive shaft to the collecting bobbin to ensure a substantially constant tension in the plied cord taken up. Specification 773,891 is referred to.
