Class 120(2) Cord-forming and winding apparatus comprises rotatable means e.g. 21 for plying at least two strands i.e. filaments, assemblages of filaments or fibres, or previously-twisted singles or multi ply yarns, by causing part of the path of a first strand to rotate around a source of a second strand, twister means 101 including a cord-twisting and winding-guide rotatable around a spindle, intermediate cord feeding means 45, and driving-means synchronously connected to all three means to form a cord having a selected constant singles twist and cord twist. In a form where two strands are plied, the plying means is of the kind described in Specification 835,411, wherein a strand A after passing through a driven spindle 15 balloons about a strand B drawn from a stationary package, the strands being wrapped around delivery-equalizing capstans 23, 25. The intermediate feed-means comprises driven canted rollers 47 around which the cord is wrapped. The cord passes via a pivoted guide 97 to an aperture in a ring 103 driven to rotate about a spindle 114 and traversed by a rail 107 moving on guides 108 under the influence of a rotated cam 143. The parts may be driven by a motor M. The spindle 15 is driven through a timing-belt 77, the feed-means 45 by a timing belt 49, a shaft 50, a change-gear 51, bevels 71 and 73, a shaft 74 and a timing-belt 75, and the ring is driven by a timing-gear 76 on shaft 74, a timing-belt 80, a shaft 82, a change-gear 81, a toothed drum 93 and a timing-belt 95. The rotation of the spindle 114 under the pull of the cord as it is being wound is resisted by a brake-drum having a strap 127 with its ends secured to a drum 129 on an adjustment shaft 131 connected to the drum by a torsion-spring. Twists are imparted at the plying-point to the cord and at 103 both to the cord and its component strands; these may be varied by changing the components of the gears at 51, 81. At 51, gears 55, 53 are exchanged for others when a large change of twist is required; gear 59 is changed when fine adjustment only is needed, and idler 61 is removed when Z-twist is required instead of S-twist. Similar changes can be made at 81 whereby twist may be added to or subtracted from the ply and the individual strands. The twist-winding means 101 may be disposed vertically above the plying-means and vice-versa, and the axis of the two may be in the same vertical plane. Shaft 82 may be driven off shaft 50 and separate synchronously-driven motors may be provided for the plying, feeding and twisting-winding means. Specification 877,489 also is referred to.
