Abstract

834,846. Aircraft cabins. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 17, 1958 [June 25, 1957], No. 20058/57. Class 4. A triangular plan form aircraft comprises a main structure including the aircraft external skin, of lenticular transverse section over a major part of its length, and a closed cabin within the main structure and having an outer wall, which over a major part of the length of the cabin has a transverse section formed by a series of outwardly convex arcs joined end to end, the radii of curvature of the arcs adjacent the longitudinal centre line of the aircraft being greater than the radii of curvature of the arcs of the lateral parts of the wall. Fig. 1 shows an aircraft propelled by two banks of four jet engines 11, and having a cabin supported by four trunnions 17, 19 mounted in braced structures 18, 20. The cross section at the trunnions 19 is shown in Fig. 3. The cabin comprises two central part cylindrical walls 12a, 12b, and two lateral walls 13 of part circular section. The walls 13 taper forwardly, the front portion 16 of the cabin being hemispherical. Rearwardly of trunnions 19, all the walls taper, the radius of curvature of wall 12c decreasing. The lines of intersection 14 of the walls are connected by vertical apertured walls or ties 15. The cabin may be pressurized.
