Abstract
585,557. Propelling aircraft. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and STANBURY, J. V. March 1, 1945, No. 5184. [Class 4] In a jet-propelled aircraft the power unit or units are housed in the fuselage and connected by rearwardly extending divergent jet pipes to jet nozzles located alongside the fuselage and preferably in the neighbourhood of the trailing edges of the wing roots. Fig. shows an arrangement in which a single power unit 12 is located on the axis of the fuselage 14, the jet pipe being divided into two branches 16 terminating in nozzles 18 at the trailing edges 20 of the wing roots. The air inlets 30 are located in the leading edges of the wing roots. In the arrangement according to Fig. 7 two power units 36 are disposed side by side in the fuselage, each being provided with a slightly curved jet pipe 38. According to a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the nozzles are located one in the upper surface and the other in the lower surface of the fuselage: Such an arrangement may be combined with that of Fig. 1 or Fig. 7 to provide four nozzles, or the'jet pipe from a single power unit may be divided into three or more branches instead of being bifurcated.
