Abstract
837,705. Jet-propulsion nozzles. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 2, 1957 [Aug. 15, 1956], No. 25011/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] Fig. 13 is a half plan view of an aircraft, having gas-turbine jet-propulsion engines 43, 44. Air from the compressors is led through duct 50 and valve 51 to a manifold 48 feeding, through ducts such as 52 and valves such as 53, a partitioned manifold 49a ... 49g. Each part feeds nozzles 54 which are elongated spanwise, and exhaust through a slot in the wing leading edge formed by two lips, one lip 55a being shown. Each nozzle may be connected to manifold 49 by a flexible coupling, whereby the directions of discharge of all the nozzles in the XOY plane may be adjusted simultaneously. The slot may taper in depth from zero at the inboard end to a maximum at an intermediate station, thereafter being of constant depth. The valves 53 may control the gaseous flow to be a minimum at the inboard end and to increase uniformly going outboard. A duct 60 controlled by valve 51 supplies gas to a manifold 59 exhausting in a jet sheet over a trailing edge flap 63. Fig. 17 shows an embodiment in which gas is blown forwardly at a wing leading edge through nozzle 21a, 21b over and under an adjustable leading edge flap. Members 65 are adjustable by a drive 67 to vary the effective cross-sections of the nozzle equally, and thus to vary the strength of the jet.
