580,995. Propelling and controlling aircraft. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 19, 1945, No. 1635. 'Convention date, Jan. 21, 1944. [Class 4] A jet propelled aircraft comprises a jet discharge tailcone having walls defining a plurality of adjacent discharge openings for the flow of the propelling gases, and means for adjusting the walls to vary the relative sizes of such openings and the relative directions of discharge therefrom. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 gases from a combustion chamber 11 are fed to a duct 12 terminating in two discharge openings formed by pairs of pivoted flaps or leaves 13, 14. The sizes and directions of discharge of the jets may be varied, to manoeuvre the aircraft, by members 18, 19 under the control of the pilot. According to the modification shown in Fig. 5, featherable propellers 23, 24, driven by gas turbines 32, 33 are provided for use during take-off and for slow speed operation, a flap valve 27 directing the gases to the turbines or the tail jets 20, or distributing the gases between them.
