Abstract

735,065. Jet propulsion plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Oct. 15, 1953 [Oct. 20, 1952], No. 26329/52. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft power plant comprises a plurality of jet propulsion engines 1 which draw air through a leading edge intake 3 and discharge through rearwardly directed jet pipes 4 into a rectangular nozzle 5. Each nozzle has a cylinder or part-cylinder 6 projecting into its lower surface substantially at its juncture with the lower surface of the wing and an adjustable flap 7 is provided for rotation about the axis of each cylinder whereby the jet efflux may be directed rearwardly or downwardly. Where all of the cylinders 6 are in transverse alignment the flaps 7 may be mounted for rotation on a common shaft 8 mounted in bearings 9 and driven by a motor 10. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the engines, instead of being arranged fore-and-aft, are arranged transversely of the aircraft and the air inlet and exhaust ducts are respectively curved to lie normal to the leading and trailing edges of the wing. Specification 724,011 is referred to.
