Abstract
834,637. Janney couplings. NATIONAL MALLEABLE & STEEL CASTINGS CO. June 2, 1958 [May 31, 1957], No. 17592/58. Class 103(5) A Janney type coupler comprising a head 10 with spaced top and bottom ears 14 having bosses 16, and a knuckle 12 pivotally mounted on a pin 18 between the bosses and fitting therebetween, has openings 20 in the ears and bosses made larger than the pin 18 and preferably elongated longitudinally of the coupler as shown in Fig. 3, and shoulders 39 on the top and bottom of the knuckle partially surrounding the bosses and providing buffing and draft surfaces 42, 40 and surfaces 28, 30 for abutting surfaces 26, 27 when in the closed and open position respectively, the shoulders being recessed at 46 to prevent frictional engagement taking place between the shoulders and bosses during opening movement of the knuckle. When the knuckle thrower 50 is operated to open the coupling the knuckle 12 is first shifted slightly as shown in Fig. 4 and then rotated until the surfaces 27, 30 abut, but the recessed portion 46 does not frictionally engage the boss until the very end of this rotational movement. In prior art couplings the bosses were reduced as at C in Fig. 3 to prevent excess friction, but with the provision of recesses 46 this reduction in strength is not now necessary.
