Abstract
The invention comprises L-amphetamine alginate. The novel product may be formed by the reaction of equi-molecular amounts of L-amphetamine and alginic acid in the presence of water, although excess of alginic acid may be necessary to obtain complete conversion of the L-amphetamine. The new salt may also be prepared by direct combination of sodium alginate and L-amphetamine hydrochloride. The new salt may be compounded into various forms for therapeutic use (see Group VI).ALSO:L-Amphetamine alginate is compounded into various forms and preparations for therapeutic use. In particular it may be made into tablets or incorporated into the coating of chewing gum. Examples describe the formulation of tablets containing L-amphetamine alginate together with (1) aspirin and phenacetin, (2) aspirin, (4) ergocristine, (5) ergotamine tartrate and (6) mephenesin.
