Abstract

833,755. Non-return valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1957 [Aug. 15, 1956], No. 25008/56. Class 135. A non-return valve, e.g. the inlet valve of a refrigerant compressor, comprises a double reed of which one reed is perforated and adapted to be opened above a minimum fluid pressure to an extent dependent on the pressure, and a second reed covering the perforation in the first reed and adapted to be opened fully to a stop position by the minimum pressure. As shown, in a refrigerant -compressor of which the cylinder 1 carries a head 3 having an inlet port 8, the valve comprises a first reed plate 4 having an integral reed 9 covering the port, a hole 11 in this reed being covered by a second reed 10 secured to the first reed plate at 15, 16. The deflection of the second reed is limited by a recessed land 18 of the cylinder. The contacting surfaces of the reeds may be covered with a damping film of oil, whilst further to assist noise reduction, a lead-covered copper gasket 5 is interposed between the cylinder and the head.
