Abstract
1283770 Valves ANDERSON, GREENWOOD & CO 10 Oct 1969 [20 March 1969] 49879/69 [20 March 1969] Heading F2V [Also in Division G3] In a pilot-operated pressure relief valve the main valve member 24 is constructed with a seat facing recess 56 that is covered with a diaphragm 46 which when the valve is closed engages seat 20 and is biased theretowards by fluid pressure communicated through the member 24 to the recess from an actuating bellows 30 connected to the pilot valve. The valve member 74 of the latter is operated by a spring-loaded double diaphragm arrangement 82, 84, the chamber 90 on one side of which is connected to atmosphere while the opposing chamber 86 is connected to the inlet 16 of the relief valve via conduit 78 and a passage (92), pressure from which also communicates via a variable restriction with conduit 42 leading to bellows 30 and via the variable restriction and a further fixed restriction with the chamber 88 intermediate the diaphragms. Increase of pressure in inlet 16 and thus chamber 86 opens pilot valve 74 to exhaust bellows 30 to atmosphere and open relief valve 24. The main valve member also has a further seal 50 held in place by a limit stop 52. The pilot valve may be connected to the main valve so as to relieve excess vacuum. Two pilot valves may be connected to the bellows 30 so that the relief valve responds to both excess vacuum and pressure.
